DESCRIPTION:German chocolate cake is not from Germany as some would suppose.  The name comes from a man named Sam German who developed a type of dark baking chocolate for cake baking.  The German Chocolate Cake it typically a chocolate layer cake filled with or topped with caramel made with egg yolks and evaporated milk.  The coconut and pecans are added once the topping has cooled.  Sometimes a chocolate frosting is spread on the sides of the cake and it is topped with maraschino cherries for garnish. \n
