March 20th is Macaron Day. I can’t decide why I love these little cookies so. Perhaps it is their bright enticing colors, how mysteriously difficult they can be, or the memory I have from the day I first tried one. In any case, I am hooked!
I think those little guys above look like a leprechaun would gobble them up like little pots of gold! I tinted them green in honor of my son’s favorite color. His birthday is next week and I thought they might be a birthday treat for him to take to school on Friday (next week is spring break for him). They are not going to make it to school though. They are filled with homemade orange curd. Next time I will choose a sturdier filling. Oh well, I guess that means I’ll have to make another batch. Suffer…Suffer…..
I have tried to make these a couple of times and didn’t have much luck. Soooo disappointing. All the carefully following the meticulous directions and the waiting and the guarding from (the children’s) harm only to be left with well… not macarons!
Maybe this time the macaron vibes of macaron day nearly upon us did their thing, because these are the closest we have come yet. They aren’t perfect…those little dimples should not be there, but I would hope I might score a passing grade in Pastry Chef for Beginners…hopefully?
Something else they would likely cover in that class is the difference between macaroon and macaron.
Anyway, here is the recipe I tried from Oh Sweet Day
